Choosing a coworking space by commute: metro, bus and parking

The best coworking space is one you can reach easily every day. Here is how to judge metro, bus, parking and last-mile access before you sign.

A coworking space can have great desks and fast internet, but if getting there takes an hour each way through traffic, you will find reasons not to go. For teams, a hard commute also narrows the pool of people you can hire. Commute is one of the few things you cannot fix after signing, so it deserves careful thought. This guide covers metro, bus, parking and last-mile access, and how to test a route properly.

Start with who needs to get there

If you are a solo worker, the answer is simple: your own commute. For a team, think about:

  • Where team members live today.
  • Where future hires are likely to live.
  • Where clients and visitors come from.
  • How each group travels: metro, bus, two-wheeler, car, cab or auto.

A short anonymous survey of the team gives you this quickly. Mark homes roughly on a map and look for the area that serves most people reasonably, rather than one person perfectly.

Metro access

In cities with metro networks, a space near a station widens your options a lot. When you check, look at:

  • Which line. A station on a line that connects to where your team lives is worth more than a nearer station on the wrong line.
  • Interchanges. Each change adds time and crowding.
  • The walk. Is it shaded, paved and well lit? Is there a busy road to cross without a signal? A short walk in the hot sun or monsoon rain can feel long.
  • Exit gates. Large stations have several exits; know which one is closest.
  • Evening safety on the walk back, especially in winter when it gets dark early.

Cities such as Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai and Hyderabad have metro networks that shape where coworking spaces cluster. You can browse, for example, a coworking space in Delhi and look at how each listing describes its nearest station.

Buses, autos and the last mile

Where metro coverage is thin, buses, shared autos and cabs carry most people. Ask:

  • Is there a bus stop on a main route within a short walk?
  • Are autos and cabs easy to find at the building at the end of the day?
  • Is there a pickup and drop point where cabs can stop safely?
  • Do e-rickshaws or shuttles run from the nearest station?

Last-mile problems are a common reason people stop using a space they otherwise like.

Parking

Even metro users sometimes drive, and clients often do.

QuestionWhy it matters
Is there two-wheeler parking, and is it covered? Many team members ride; monsoon and sun matter
How many car spots, and are they reserved or first-come?Arriving to a full lot wastes time
Is parking included or charged separately? It can add meaningfully to the monthly cost
Is there visitor parking?First impressions for clients
Is there EV charging?Useful if anyone drives an electric vehicle

Test the route properly

Google Maps estimates are a starting point, not an answer. Before you sign:

  1. Make the trip on a normal weekday at your real arrival time.
  2. Make the return trip at your real leaving time.
  3. Include the last mile on foot or by auto.
  4. If possible, try it once in rain.
  5. Ask one or two team members to do the same from their homes.

Combine this with a day pass so you also experience the space at the hours you will use it. Our tour questions cover what to look at once you arrive.

Think about the whole year

A route that is easy in February can be very different in July. Ask local members or the community manager whether the road outside floods during heavy rain, whether the underpass near the station becomes impassable, and how long cabs take to arrive on rainy evenings. Also think about construction: a metro extension or flyover project near the building may make access harder for months, but may improve it once complete.

Timing can change the commute

If your team can shift hours, a space that is hard to reach at 9 am may be easy at 10:30 am. Ask whether flexible hours are possible in your work. Check the space's access hours so that late starts and late finishes are supported; our guide to 24x7 access explains what to confirm.

Safety on the way

A commute that feels safe at noon may not at 8 pm. Walk the route in the evening, note street lighting, footpaths and whether the area is busy or deserted after office hours. Our safety checklist for women includes commute-specific questions that are useful for everyone.

Weighing commute against price

A cheaper space further away is not always cheaper once you count travel cost and time. For each shortlisted space, estimate monthly travel cost per person and time spent commuting. Even a rough estimate makes the trade-off visible. On Coworks you can shortlist up to four coworking spaces in different areas and view them on compare alongside your commute notes.

Questions people ask

How close to a metro station should a coworking space be?

Close enough that the walk is comfortable in summer heat and monsoon rain, and safe in the evening. A short, well-lit walk matters more than a straight-line distance.

Should I check parking even if I take the metro?

Yes, if any of your team or visitors drive. Ask about two-wheeler and car parking, cost and whether spots are reserved.

What is the best way to test a commute?

Do the trip at your real arrival and departure times on a normal weekday, including the last-mile part. Weekends and midday trips give a misleading picture.
